FERI Markets Update November 2020 - Vaccine Breakthrough: Euphoria Comes too Early

Bad Homburg, 11/23/2020
by Dr. Eduard Baitinger, FERI
  • Prospect of corona vaccine gives cyclical stocks a boost
  • CoViD19 pandemic still far from being under control
  • Uncertain change of power in the USA increases geopolitical risks

Hopes for the early use of CoViD19 vaccines have boosted the stock markets and led to a strong sector rotation. The news that vaccinations could possibly be started this year has given a significant boost to cyclical stocks in particular. Despite these good prospects, however, there is no cause for euphoria, as economic life is still far from normal. On the one hand, the timely approval of the vaccine is being countered by the continuing rampant wave of CoViD19, which will probably require weeks or even months of restrictions in public life, especially in Europe. On the other hand, despite the use of vaccines, it will take a long time before the infection process is brought under control. It is extremely unlikely that sufficient herd immunity can be achieved through vaccination in Germany or Europe as early as the first half of 2021. Nevertheless, the cyclical investment scenario should prevail and even accelerate from the beginning of 2021. This is due to the significant economic recovery in China and the ongoing fiscal and monetary aid programmes of many countries. In this environment, global interest rates would rise and thus tend to weigh on highly valued technology stocks in particular. Since this sector has a very high market capitalization, a pronounced cyclical scenario would threaten a fragile stock market overall even in the event of a clear economic recovery. In this situation, investors should be very selective on both the equity and bond sides.

Uncertainty Factor Trump

In the short term, the investment scenario will be determined not only by the corona pandemic, but also by the outcome of the US presidential election. It is true that the Democratic challenger Joe Biden won the election. Nevertheless, the Republicans will most likely defend their majority in the US Senate and block or at least severely water down important Democratic plans such as tax increases and more regulation. The markets have so far reacted very calmly to this constellation. In the short term, however, there are still considerable risks. Trump's strategy of blocking an orderly transfer of power to Biden by all means gives rise to fears of the worst. In addition, the still-president will do everything in the coming weeks to consolidate his political legacy as a "hardliner". In the short term, therefore, targeted provocations against China or Iran cannot be ruled out. Consequently, despite a general brightening of the investment environment, investors should keep a close eye on their portfolio risks for the time being.
