May 2025: Digital concentration of power in the tech sector

Bad Homburg, 5/2/2025

For almost a decade, the global search engine market has had a clear market leader: Google - with a market share of almost 80 percent in desktop use (see graphic).

Even if other competitors have recently been able to slightly increase their market share and new AI search engines will gain noticeable influence in the future, Google's dominance is an alarming example of the concentration of digital power in the tech sector.

In just a few years, tech giants such as Amazon, Apple and Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) have massively expanded their market dominance - with far-reaching consequences for competition, opinion-forming, democracy and social processes.

The influence of the political environment should not be underestimated: in the US, public offices and the private business interests of individual tech billionaires are already intertwined in a “buddy economy”. The planned deregulation under Trump 2.0 could further intensify the worrying formation of monopolies in the tech sector.

What does it mean for entrepreneurs, investors and the public if the digital concentration of power continues unchecked? The FERI Cognitive Finance Institute examines and answers this question in a recent analysis.

The analysis can be downloaded in German from the download area on this page.
